Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Government has declared assistance of 5 lakhs to each family of those who died in the Kuwait fire tragedy, which occurred in June this year, claiming 49 lives and leaving 50 others injured. In an official statement, sources said that the decision at the meeting chaired by the Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Thursday morning was final.

Besides the ₹5 lakh compensation for the kin of the deceased, the Cabinet green-lit ₹1 lakh help for each of those injured. A thorough examination of the issue shows that Health Minister Veena George has been expected to supervise the management and treatment of the affected individuals in Kuwait and the repatriation of the body of the deceased to his home state, Kerala. She will be joined by Jeevan Babu, the state mission director.

The latter from the Chief Minister’s office revealed that two prominent businessmen, M A Yusuff Ali and Ravi Pillai, have committed ₹5 lakhs and ₹2 lakh per family, respectively, for the affected families, and the same will be processed through the Department of Non-Resident Keralites’ Affairs. This initiation will take the total help per family up to twelve lakh of Indian Rupees.

The Cabinet stated that efforts through NORKA and the expatriate community remain ongoing to provide all possible assistance to the affected persons while offering condolences for the destruction and loss of precious lives in the tragedy. A 24/7 help desk, along with a global contact center, has successfully been established to better coordinate the assistance measures.

Also, the state government reiterated its support for cooperating with the central government and Kuwait government to gain all-around support during these tough crises.
