Karnataka’s Chief Minister Siddaramaiah stated that he would approach the court of law against the order of the Cauvery Water Management Authority, which ordered Karnataka to release one Thousand Million Cubic feet of water to Tamil Nadu daily. Sparking reactions from reporters after a meeting with ministers and senior officials at the Home Office, Krishna Siddaramaiah reiterated the state’s willingness to challenge the order.

All-Party Meeting Scheduled in Karnataka

Regarding this disputed order for water release, Siddaramaiah announced that the all-party meeting will take place on the 14th of July to discuss the further steps of the government. Pointing out that all political parties emerging in Karnataka should be unified, he stressed the fact that it is necessary to make decisions collectively in this concern. Both factions, including Union Ministers, Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha members, and MLAs, will be invited to have exhaustive deliberation in order to decide the stand of the state.

While briefing the press, Siddaramaiah also discussed problems in this aspect for Karnataka. Although meteorological reports lately indicated that there would be normal rainfall, there is still a 28% deficiency in inflows in the four dams in the Cauvery River basin. The Chief Minister has reaffirmed the state’s request to hold off making any decision until the end of July on the grounds of agriculture entity and existing water availability issues.

Challenges

The Chief Minister went on to explain that consequent to an assessment by the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC) to release one thousand Million Cubic Feet (TMC) of water from July 12, the current releases equate to inflows into the Kabini Dam. As much as only 60 percent of water capacity is available in the Cauvery Basin reservoirs, Siddaramaiah stressed the need to practice optimal usage of water for irrigation needs because of the rain-deficient scenario.

Now regarding the elaboration of the contested water release order, Karnataka’s government is to outline further actions after the all-party meeting, where anticipation is made to build a common stand among concerned parties. Analysis of Siddaramaiah’s statements shows that the state is assertive in protecting its water resources, though it negotiates various regulatory measures affecting inter-state water distribution.
