Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara on Thursday ordered a high-level investigation into alleged honey-trapping attempts on the state ministers and political leaders. This came after concerned voices were made during the existing Karnataka Assembly session on the utilisation of honey traps as political weapons. Parameshwara, addressing the Assembly, lamented the need to safeguard the dignity of representatives elected to the Assembly and thwart such malafide tactics. “We should stop such incidents if we have to save the dignity of our members. I will order a high-level probe into it; that’s a serious issue,” he said.
The controversy caught the attention of the public after Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Satish Jarkiholi told the media that two unsuccessful honey trap efforts had been made on a sitting minister. It also says such attempts have been going on over the past two decades, and it has also hit leaders from party lines like Congress, BJP and JD(S). He condemned the use of honey traps for political mileage and demanded to end such manipulative tactics.
The issue became the subject of concentrated debate in the Assembly. BJP minister V Sunil Kumar alleged that the Congress government was into a ‘honey trap factory’ creating political tension. And BJP MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal also claimed that Cooperation Minister K N Rajanna had been targeted in a recent honey-trapping attempt.
Reacting to this, Minister Rajanna admitted that the issue was growing, saying: “Karnataka is a factory for CDs, many people claim.’ This has nothing to do with a state issue; it is national leaders, too.” And he said he was filing a formal written complaint and demanding that a thorough investigation take place. Avanti blasted the Assembly when she revealed that at least 48 political leaders were targeted through honey traps, videos compromised of them.
