Manoj Sinha, the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, on Friday dismissed two government employees of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district on suspicion of involvement with the banned terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). According to the officials, this action was taken in the greater interest of ensuring security and not letting those with extremist inclinations keep going with their delicate positions in the government.
The two employees who have been threatened with being sacked are Khurshid Ahmed Rather and Siyad Ahmad Khan, both employees of the Sheep Husbandry Department stationed in Karnah and Keran, respectively. Authorities argued that both individuals were having contact with the LeT operatives and were reportedly supporting their activities and jeopardising their integrity in office.
The decision by LG Sinha was reached on the basis that it is allowed in the provisions which enable the administration to discontinue the services of employees who engage in an activity that is considered to present a threat to the security of the state. This is just one step in what the Jammu and Kashmir administration is doing with employees, especially those who maintain a connection with terror activities or who are involved either directly or indirectly in collaborating with extremist groups.
It is a sensitive district that had previously been on the Line of Control (LoC) and, as a result of acts of infiltration and the activities of militants. The dismissal of two employees in the education sector and the livestock department reflects the government’s interest in making even grassroots organisations free of extremism influence.
This is not the first time of acted in such a manner. A few employees in Jammu and Kashmir have been dismissed on the same lines in recent years as the administration has intensified its crackdown against separatist sympathisers in the government workforce. The step will highlight the zero tolerance of the UT government against terrorism and its sympathisers.
