Attending a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren appeared to put a political shift merely a few days after he reclaimed his title as the management of Jharkhand. The courtesy call Soren said he paid on the president has also been relayed on the social networking site X (formerly Twitter), where Soren posted a picture of the brief encounter in the office).

Jharkhand CM’s Legal Issues

Being the executive president of the Jharkhand Mukti Morra (JMM), Hemant Soren has squarely been in the hot seat this year. Soren left the chief minister’s post before he was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on January 31. The circumstances of his arrest were about a money laundering scam related to a land fraud case, a factor that attracted political and legal wars.

Soren was in prison for about five months after he left his job and was arrested by the authorities. The charges pressed against him involving embezzlement of funds, and corruption noted in the media garnered a lot of attention. Over those months of his imprisonment, many commentaries and panel discussions ensued, focusing on the political aspect and the leadership perspective in Jharkhand.

Back in Power

Finally, on July 4, after fixing the bail, Hemant Soren was returned to the Chief Minister of Jharkhand. His returning to power became an important event; it showed that he was a fighter and, indeed, the realpolitik at play. Soren’s reinstatement was perceived by many as the influence of political strength and the loyalty Soren still had among his party and his supporters.

In the course of the meeting with the Indian Prime Minister Modi, Soren allegedly touched on issues relating to Jharkhand as a result of the access granted to the Indian media as well as the information provided by the Indian news sources. Though the specifics of the discussion are still unclear, it is known that the topics included development plans, schemes run for the welfare of the state, and may be problems faced by the state administration.
