Jammu and Kashmir- The Union Territory reported its highest voter turnout in the last 35 years, with 58.46%. The Election Commission of India (ECI) announced on Sunday that only 58.46% of the eligible voters turned out to cast their ballots. When getting down to the voters’ details, the electorate was 8,726,281, and the turnout of voters in the recently concluded elections amounted to 5,111,550, creating a remarkable benchmark in the democratic vanguard of the region.

The CEC Rajiv Kumar and Election Commissioners Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu thanked the polling personnel and security officials who ensured the polling process went smoothly today. They said that it represented great value, pointing out that it clearly indicated enhanced political activism and voting.

In the Union Territory of Ladakh, located next to Jammu and Kashmir, the voter turnout was even higher — 71%. 82%, and has thus come up with empirical findings that ensure the increasing representation of the democratic sector in the region further probes that.

The ECI’s press statement also highlighted the remoteness of the do-or-die match and the number of contesting candidates from 862 in 2019 to over 1000 as a clear illustration of improved and encouraging citizens’ participation. This was supported by increased C-vigil complaints and 2455 requests for holding rallies through the Suvidha Portal. The statement referred to as electoral mobilization, a beautiful and complex weave akin to the Kashmir shawl, suggesting a deep and effective redeployment of electoral and campaign space.

According to CEC Kumar in the press release for the Assembly elections, the activeness is a massive plus for the Union Territory for the upcoming Assembly elections’ active participation to encourage the democratic process.

The ECI also stated that gauging voter turnout by comparing the five parliamentary constituencies—Srinagar, Baramulla, Anantnag, Rajouri, Udhampur, and Jammu—was difficult because of the recent act of delimitation, which redefined the constituencies’ borders and concluded this year in May.
