The India Meteorology Department (IMD) has predicted widespread rainfall over West Bengal till July 1, due to the possible development of a low-lying area along the West Bengal- Odisha coast. The incoming and developing system, as indicated in its latest bulletin released on Wednesday, is likely to cause light to moderate rainfall across most parts of the state, whilst several isolated heavy downpours are likely to be felt in various districts of the state in the days to come.
Districts Purulia, Bankura, West Burdwan, East and West Midnapore, Jhargram, and South 24 Parganas in south Bengal have a high chance of getting lots of rain in one or two places over the next three days. The IMD cites the conditions of good winds and heavy moisture intrusion by the Bay of Bengal, which will bring about the forecast rainfall.
North Bengal will also be greatly affected. The main areas that are expected to receive extensive rain are districts such as Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar and North and South of Dinajpur. The very heavy rainfall at isolated places is predicted in the regions of Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar on June 28.
The IMD forecasts squally weather in the Odisha-West Bengal coast with the speed of surface winds expected to reach 35 to 45 kmph, and a speed of 55 kmph expected due to a gust near the north Bay of Bengal till Thursday. Consequently, the sea conditions will be rough. Fishermen have been strictly warned not to go to the sea along and off the West Bengal-Odisha coast as well as to the northern Bay of Bengal during this period.
By Wednesday morning, the highest rainfall in the state was reported in Kalimpong, which received 64 mm of rain in the last 24 hrs, followed by Darjeeling, which got 35 mm. Authorities are on guard to rush to any weather-related emergencies in the days ahead.
