Heavy to very heavy rain is possible in the South Konkan coastal districts—Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg—according to an orange alert issued by the IMD for May 21 and 22. Its guidelines declare that an orange alert comes into effect when rain is about to exceed 115.6 mm, and it could reach another 204.4 mm in just 24 hours. Meanwhile, people in the North Konkan region, including Mumbai, have been put on notice because 64.5 to 115.5 mm of moderate rain is forecast.
Shubhangi Bhute, an expert at the IMD’s RMC in Mumbai, said that the warnings are due to the likely formation of a low-pressure system at the east-central Arabian Sea, close to Karnataka, beginning on May 22. Following an analysis of the situation, we have sent alerts to both North and South Konkan districts, she stated.
The department has said that the ghat areas in Maharashtra, Nashik, and Pune, will experience strong winds at 50–60 kilometers per hour, along with heavy rain.
The IMD noted on Thursday morning that there were widespread rain showers in several Indian states from 8:30 AM to 5:30 AM the next day. Standing out among these were areas such as Gangetic West Bengal, Konkan and Goa, coastal Andhra Pradesh, and areas in the Northeast.
In the coming days, the IMD predicts that the west coast, with Konkan, Goa, Karnataka, and Kerala, will have days of heavy rain. Torrential rains led to a red alert being issued in the Uttara Kannada district in Karnataka on Wednesday.
Officials have asked people in alerted areas to listen to weather updates and stay careful.
