On Sunday the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that there will be light to moderate rainfall in isolated areas of Chennai and some districts of Tamil Nadu. This weather phenomenon has been associated with development of a low-pressure zone in the southwest Bay of Bengal, which is located in the Sri Lankan coast. The strengthening of the system will lead to the extensive rainfall in coastal and neighboring areas of the state.
According to the recent advisory of IMD, heavy to very heavy rains will be experienced in isolated areas in the districts of Villupuram, Chennai, Chengalpattu, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam and Tiruvarur and the Union Territory of Puducherry and Karaikal. These areas can get very unbearable especially in the late evening and early morning hours.
On Monday, the IMD additionally issued a warning that heavy to very heavy rainfall was likely to happen in a few districts, and these included Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Villupuram, Puducherry, Thoothukudi, and Kanyakumari. The drifting rain bands of the low-pressure system will also affect weather conditions in the southern regions of Tamil Nadu and make the localized flooding in the low regions of the state more likely.
Warnings sent throughout Tamil Nadu.
Pudukkottai, Thiruvarur and Mayiladuthurai are the districts which have been alerted by the weather department to be particularly on the look out today as the chance of heavy rainfall is possible and therefore, the authorities and citizens need to take particular care. Some other districts such as the Nilgiris, Madurai and Thoothukudi among others have faced a yellow alert.
The IMD has warned fishermen not to venture in the southwest bay of Bengal and surrounding coastal waters because of rough conditions of the sea. The local administrations have also been advised to be ready in case of potential waterlogging, traffic hitches and destruction of standing crops.
The low-pressure system will continue to change and one can expect more updates and chances of rainfall in bursts taking place in coming days.
