Former Chief Minister of Jharkhand, Champai Soren, is likely to step down on Wednesday to pave the way for his brother Hemant Soren to become the next Mukhiya of Jharkhand. This comes just days after Hemant Soren was granted bail, information has it.

The procedures for the formation of a new government will commence soon as there is consensus in the legislature party meeting of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) governing alliance. The function was hosted at the Champai Soren home and was attended by others such as Hemant Soren and Ghulam Ahmed Mir – he is the Congress party in charge of the Jharkhand unit.

A JMM leader further affirmed that “Chief Minister Champai Soren may tender resignation tonight [Wednesday] for the disintegration of the present government, and the respective formalities for the new government will start”.

Champai Soren became the Chief Minister of the JMM, Congress and RJD combined Government on February 2. This came after Hemant Soren, the son of Tribal Welfare minister O. P. Soren, was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on January 31 on charges of money laundering of an amount relating to an alleged land scam. Hemant Soren was released on bail soon after on June 28 after the Jharkhand High Court bailed him out.

In the legal fight, Hemant Soren has never been guilty of the charges levelled against him, continually claiming that he was framed in the case. He says that there were plots against him that made him spend five months in jail. As Soren said, the people who dared to protest against the central government were the victims who underwent some suppression.

The comeback of Hemant Soren is going to cause major political overturns in Jharkhand. His re-election as the chief minister constitutes a critical juncture for the JMM-led alliance as it aims at consolidating political power for it to effectively deal with the challenges that have emerged while he was out of power.
