The Haryana Rajya Sabha election ended late on Monday night in dramatic style with both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress Party getting 1 seat apiece following a nail-biter contest. BJP candidate Sanjay Bhatia and the Congress nominee Karamvir Boudh were declared victors by the returning officer, Pankaj Agrawal after the counting that stretched past midnight.
Among 90 members of Haryana Assembly, 88 members voted with two members of the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) boycotting. But five ballots, four of which were of Congress MLAs and one of BJP, were declared void and this had a considerable impact.
The race became a cliffhanger owing to cross-voting, at least five Congress votes were allegedly transferred in favour of an independent candidate who was supported by the BJP. It is also true that even after this blowback Karamvir Boudh emerged as a winner by a slim margin defeating his opponent by 28 votes.
Sanjay Bhatia on the other hand easily surpassed the mark of 2,767 votes, gaining 39 first-preference votes, which was equivalent to 3,900. His extra votes were estimated taking 1,133 which further increased his lead.
The result of the late-night underscored the political tussle in Haryana, and both the major parties succeeded in getting a piece of the pie despite the surprising voting patterns and spoilt ballots emerging as an important factor in the ultimate result.
