Haryana Transport Minister Anil Vij said on Wednesday that a man who had offered an exceptionally high bidding price of a VIP vehicle number is under investigation after not paying the necessary price. The highest offer the coveted registration number HR 88 B 8888 had received according to an online bid is 1.17 crore by the bidder known as Sudhir of Hisar, who was bidding against 45 other bidders.

According to the rules of the auction, they are required to pay 10,000 as a security deposit and 1,000 as registration fees and the price of the VIP number is 50,000 as the base price. Sudhir paid the original security sum of 11000 and became a winner, and later gave up the security by failing to pay the entire amount of the bid on time.

To a large extent, Minister Vij was worried about the incident by saying that the financial capability and the basis of revenue of the bidder will now be put under serious consideration in order to determine whether he was actually in a position to afford such a big amount. He stressed that allotment of VIP and fancy numbers in Haryana is only done through strict auction process and that individuals tend to offer higher bids not only due to prestige but also to help in raising state collections.

Vij however cautioned that the process should not be taken lightly. He said that some people seem to be taking these auctions lightly and they are interested but not doing anything about it. He has instructed the officials of the Transport Department to critically evaluate the income, assets and financial background of the bidder. Also, the Income Tax Department is being petitioned in writing to make sure that it is properly investigated and to deter fraudulent financial claims in future auctions.

The number HR88B8888 auction took place at the sub-division of Charkhi Dadri called Badhra. The VIP number will be back in the auction pool as the winning bidder has not made the payment.
