Current Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of election roll in Gujarat has revealed that the state has significant mismatch in the database of votes. The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) in a release pointed out that over 17 lakh of deceased voters were still on the electoral roll indicating the magnitude of the obsolete and inaccurate entries that needed immediate redress.

SIR campaign that commenced on November 4 incorporates booth level officers (BLOs) who will distribute enumeration forms to all the voters in Gujarat. This massive check-up exercise will go on up to December 11. In the last one month, BLOs have given out forms to more than five crore registered voters listed in the electoral roll of 2025. The distribution of forms has been done in 100 percent in most of the 33 districts in Gujarat.

An enormous digitisation project, with the distribution, is underway. By Thursday, 12 of the state assembly constituencies had been digitized out of 182. These are Dhanera and Tharad (Banaskantha district); Limkheda and Dahod (ST) ( Dahod district); Bayad, Dhoraji, Jasdan and Gondal (Rajkot district); Keshod, Mehmadabad ( Kheda district); Khambhat, Anand; Jalalpore ( Navsari district). Dang has recorded the best rate of improvement with 94.35 percent of the enumeration forms digitised out of all the districts.

The process of revision demonstrated some other irregularities in the electoral rolls. Other than the 17 lakh deceased voters, over 6.14 lakh voters were absent at their registered addresses. Moreover, there are more than 30 lakh permanently migrated voters to new addresses meaning that mass corrections have to be done in the rolls.

Through verifications, BLOs also found out more than 3.25 lakh voters under the category of repeated which is to state that the name of the voter is registered in more than one location on the electoral roll.

The process of SIR is to cleanse and update the electoral roll before subsequent elections and make them accurate and not abused.
