Gujarat has also changed the liquor consumption norms in the GIFT City by revising the policy on serving and consumption of alcohol under the name wine and dine policy where liquor should be served and consumed in a broader scope of areas. The increased areas are now the hotel terraces, lawns and poolside areas, a move that is supposed to make the city more attractive as a global finance and technology hub as officials stated.
The updated policy allows both local and foreign visitors, as well as licensed personnel involved in GIFT City to drink liquor in licensed establishments. The leaders have explained that the modifications are aimed at establishing a more globally competitive business environment and enhancing the ease of doing business by international investors, experts in the fields of technology and multinational enterprises that do business in the city.
GIFT City or Gujarat International Finance Tec-City is the first operational International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) in India. The smart city is positioned between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar on a land of 880 acres along the banks of the river Sabarmati. It has been constructed to become a global financial and IT hub, where global banks, fintech companies, and technology firms are located.
According to the officials, a change in the Wine and Dine policy to match international business practices is appropriate as these facilities are regarded as necessary in networking, hospitality, and corporate interaction. This is done by liberalizing the environment in which GIFT City operates so that the government can enhance its competitiveness as compared to other financial centres in the world.
Simultaneously, the Gujarat government has been keen to stress that these concessions will be confined to GIFT City and do not portray any wider change in the long-established prohibition policy in the state. The state is devoted to the current liquor laws.
The sale, purchase, transport, or possession of liquor outside the permitted areas under the Gujarat Prohibition (Amended) Act, 2017 is a grave crime.
