On Tuesday, Gaurav Gogoi, who is a Congress MP from Jorhat and a Congress leader, officially took charge as the president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC). Gogoi was joined by Bhupen Kumar Borah, Jitendra Singh, Rakibul Hussain, Debabrata Saikia, Roselina Tirkey, Jakir Hussain Sikdar, and Pradip Sarkar.

Gogoi was chosen to lead the state as president on May 26, as the 2026 Assam assembly elections were about to begin. When he was appointed, he went on a 300-kilometer roadshow from Jorhat to Guwahati with his followers and important figures, to highlight the party’s unity.

After stepping into the position, Gogoi pointed out that Congress’s values and commitment to upholding the Constitution wouldn’t change, saying, “A new person now leads, yet our principles are the same. We are working towards a world where everyone is treated with equality and justice.”

He acknowledged the support of the party leaders and swore to do all he could to make sure Congress wins the assembly elections. It is our collective task, composed of MPs, MLAs, office bearers, and ground workers, to help Congress regain control in Assam, Gaurav Gogoi claimed.

Now that Gogoi leads Congress, it is seeking to once again win influence in Assam politics since 2016, when the BJP took over. Borah will now manage the party’s campaign committee, and Saikia will oversee coordination duties.

However, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma still targets Gogoi and has accused Gogoi’s wife of being connected to Pakistani agencies. Gogoi insists he is not involved and hopes the public will see the SIT’s findings.
