Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi has alleged that the state government has placed barricades on people who tried to pay tribute to the late singer Zubeen Garg. In one candlelight march held by the Congress to seek justice for Garg, Gogoi claimed that the government was doing everything in its power to stop the peaceful campaign of the people through numerous hindrances.
“Zubeen Garg is a hero that people of Assam want to honour and avenge. Nevertheless, the state government has been attempting to curb this collective feeling in the last several days, forming numerous obstacles,” Gaurav Gogoi said. “Notwithstanding such efforts, the urge of the people to remember and avenge Zubeen Garg is still high. Do not, I beseech, the government, interfere with their tributes of peace? “he said.
One month after Garg had died, the candlelight march, which was organised on Sunday in Guwahati, was attended by fans, Congress workers, and political leaders. The event honoured him with flowers and remembered the great contribution of the singer to the Assamese culture and identity. According to Gogoi, people of Assam continue to grieve the loss, describing Garg as a true leader of Assamese society.
“Assamese people greatly miss Zubeen Garg and his leadership, his strength and his voice. He may not have participated in politics, but he was surely a guide to the Assamese society. We need him today more than ever before to guide us,” Gogoi told the reporters.
The Congress MP also urged the state government to provide a clear and thorough investigation into Garg’s death and to provide justice in the case promptly.
Zubeen Garg died on September 19, in Singapore, allegedly whilst swimming, a day before his appearance at the Northeast India Festival. His art had an irredeemable gap in the cultural landscape of Assam due to his untimely death.
