Gauhati High Court Bar Association (GHCBA) members on Thursday embarked on a three-day hunger strike protesting against the state government decisions of relocating the Gauhati High Court complex to North Guwahati. It is a protest being held, lasting a total of six hours a day out as a sign of defiance to the proposed relocation of the court to Rangmahal, where another judicial township is set to be established.

Hunger strike was started at 10 am before the old Gauhati High Court building and it is headed by GHCBA president K. N. Choudhury. The move to hold the protest was reached at a spontaneously convened Extra- Ordinary General Meeting of the association on Tuesday where they all agreed to protest in a non- violent and democratic fashion.

The hunger strike of the bar members will also remain on Friday and Sunday, according to the plan. Moreover, the association has resolved to boycott the foundation stone laying ceremony of the new proposed complex of High Court.

A new building of Gauhati High Court has been suggested as a part of a big judicial township at Rangmahal of North Guwahati. Chief Justice of India, Justice Surya Kant is due to lay the foundation stone of the complex on January 11. Nonetheless, the bar association has clarified that it is not in the support of the relocation and has opted to stay out of the event as its protest.

In a Wednesday statement, GHCBA said that the hunger strike was a peaceful and democratic show of its position on the matter. The association has voiced objections towards the re-location of the court complex pointing out that such relocation might pose difficulties in the logistics of lawyers, litigants, and court employees.
