Officials reported Sunday that over 100 people were rescued after a flash flood in the rain triggered heavy rainfall in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ramban district early Sunday morning. While the deluge has caused widespread destruction in Dharam Kund village, around 40 residential houses here were damaged. The flooding was caused by the sudden overflow of a local stream, which trapped many villagers in their homes.
While the threat of cloudbursts and relentless rain continued causing a flood, and a man in uniform kept pounding on the ground, police personnel launched a swift rescue operation. They safely evacuated over 100 villagers from the area on a sledge to safer locations, braving harsh weather conditions. There were also several vehicles swept away in the strong currents caused by the torrential downpour.
The rain wasn’t all that had an impression in the village. Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, one of the most important lifelines to Kashmir Valley from the rest of the country, was seriously hit. There were landslides, mudslides, and incidents of shooting stones at nearly a dozen places between Nashri and Banihal owing to incessant rain. In response, both directions of traffic were suspended and, consequently, goods and passenger movement were partially halted.
The closure was confirmed by a spokesperson from the traffic department, who told commuters to stay away from the route until weather stabilises and the debris is cleared. In some areas along the highway, rain is still occurring and can be dangerous because of the travel. ‘We will start restoration work once conditions improve,’ he said.
The situation is closely watched by authorities, and the disaster elements are in reserve. It follows that more rain is forecast for the region, and it means officials have urged residents in vulnerable spots to remain cautious and cooperate with emergency services. The latest incident highlights the fact that such extreme weather events continue to be a big challenge in the hilly area of Jammu and Kashmir.
