The Gujarat Refinery, with a commissioning capacity of the plant from 1962, is one of the biggest refineries located in India. It has essentially a refining capacity of Crude oil processing of 13.7 million tonnes per year, and it makes downstream products like Petrol, Diesel, LPG, Kerosene and Aviation Turbine Fuel for use in various business segments. The refinery supplies the region’s main markets of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and parts of Maharashtra and Rajasthan. Even though IOC has not come out yet with a detailed report on the cause of the explosion as authorities have started the process of assessing the losses and coming up with measures to prevent any occurrence of such incidents in the future in the refinery business.
This unfortunate event demonstrates the possible calamity that may occur in connection with large industries and factories, and this is more so because it requires standard safety measures and structural checks to contain such mishaps.
