On Friday, Jai Ram Thakur, former Chief Minister and Leader of the Opposition of Himachal Pradesh, unleashed a cruel attack on the Congress-led state government over serious charges of grave lapses of cheating and irregularities in the police recruitment examination conducted recently. Thakur termed the scandal as an act of betrayal towards youth in Himachal Pradesh and wanted Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu to take moral responsibility and quit his post.

Politics has made a mockery of the whole recruitment process, Thakur said, speaking at a press conference in Shimla. Candidates are seen discussing examination questions in execution halls and fixing papers in groups on videos, which is a pure representation of blatant cheating. It is not poor administration, but it is capital punishment. This is a position which, perhaps, has not been regarded by the Chief Minister or by anyone as of any moral standing, and he must at once resign.

He said that the police recruitment drive was the only major hiring that had taken place in the past 2 and a half years under the Congress government. This government has shut the Staff Selection Commission, and in about three years, this government has conducted only one police recruitment, and now there are question marks in it as far as credibility is concerned, Thakur said.

He also claimed that mobile phones were admitted into examination rooms and invigilators did not act. Videos of examination centres in Shimla, Palampur Road, and Chamba show clearly the candidates cheating openly. However, the government is not ready to unleash CCTV videos. What are they trying to conceal?”

This is something Thakur also disclosed when he said two people were arrested, namely Vikram and Balwinder, both of the Dehra region in Kangra district, with regard to the scandal. He, however, added that a mere two arrests cannot clean up a scam of such magnitude. As he added, the candidates were summoned to Haryana and needed to provide payments of up to Rs 35 lakhs in case they received jobs.
