In a possible sign of a future political shift, AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) has indicated that the party could form an alliance with the party of actor-politician Vijay, Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), before the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Addressing a rally in the Dharmapuri district, EPS addressed the people by targeting TVK flags in the crowd and said a grand alliance would be formed in the state soon to face the ruling DMK.

EPS clarified to the supporters that there should be an alliance, though the stronger one will be the one that will be assembled under the banner of AIADMK. Look here at the flags, a Pillayar suzhi to the alliance, such as it is, an opportune Tamil Hindu icon. He also gave a thumbs down to Chief Minister and DMK president M.K. Stalin, telling him, “The roar here is going to go through your ears. Your plan won’t succeed.”

Earlier this month, reports alleged that the AIADMK has opened links to the camp of Vijay under the backdrop of the Karur stampede disaster that killed 41 people. Negotiations between AIADMK and TVK had earlier collapsed when AIADMK had severed ties with the BJP-led NDA. As the BJP now tries to win the support of Vijay despite the perceived differences in ideology, AIADMK is seeking to harness the youth fetish that TVK enjoys- a region that the party is currently failing to win.

But friends of Vijay insist that TVK is not seeking to affiliate with big parties in the current circumstances. The members of the team of Vijay stated, anonymously, that TVK will run on its own in the 2026 elections or with minor partners, without an alliance.
