On Wednesday, the Election Commission of India (ECI) began a two-day national training programme in New Delhi aimed at helping West Bengal BLOs get better prepared for handling any eventuality on the ground. The initiative follows in the footsteps of ECI’s directive to build the capacity of key personnel and upskill them in keeping with the changing environment in running elections.
According to an official release, the training session had in attendance two district election officers, 12 electoral registration officers and 217 BLOs in West Bengal. The programme is aimed at training them on the various procedures in the election, facilitation of voters and the use of technology to ensure smooth and transparent electoral practice.
Parallel to this, the ECI conducted a complete orientation programme for district level social media officers, media nodal officers and public relations officers of the country in the national capital. States and eight Union Territories were represented by persons. This is media-focused training with the aim of developing a robust communication strategy to protect thousands of lives and prevent voter apathy by curbing misinformation and preemptively engaging in spreading nationwide election-related information.
In this contemporary media atmosphere, the ECI stressed the importance of making sure that communication is correct and on point, as misinformation can swiftly spoil public opinion and voter trust. It highlighted the ways how and to whom one could engage the public as well as maintain legal and ethical communication standards on traditional and digital platforms.
In previous statements, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar has accepted the importance of the media as a key stakeholder in the democratic process. In an age characterized by digital communication, he has underlined the necessity of having transparency and reporting facts in order to keep public trust in electoral systems.
The ECI has a commitment to free, fair, and informed elections, and what these initiatives allow is for contributors to empower both communication teams and field officials with the right skills and tools to help service the democratic process.
