Rajouri: There was a disturbing incident that occurred at the sub-district hospital at Nowshera in the Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir, where Gurpreet Singh was detained early Monday morning for misbehaving with a female doctor on duty. Speaking to newspersons, the officials said the incident occurred around 12. 45 a.m. when Singh was in the hospital with a patient.

Eye-witness testimonies are revealing that Singh had become rather aggressive in his demeanour; not only did he shatter a windowpane, but he also used foul language against the female doctor who tried to calm him down. He not only made havoc and destroyed property but also instilled fear and insecurity among the people of the hospital.

It did not take long for the doctors and the paramedical staff to down their tools and protest against the development. They urged the police to come hard on Singh and asked the authorities to increase security to protect the doctors and patients in the hospital.

The protest went on until the senior civil and police officers came to the scene. They consoled them by telling the protesting staff that Singh had been arrested and that a case had been filed against him under the relevant sections of the criminal law. This led to the calming down of the rampage during which normalcy returned at the hospital through the following intervention.

Confirming details of the incident, Block medical officer Iqbal Malik said that Singh attacked her in a very unprovoked and aggressive manner. He was particularly incensed by the destruction of hospital property and the humiliation of the female doctor into consent and stressed the need to beef up security to avert such experiences in the future.

The incident is a reminder of the important issue of security of these healthcare personnel and protection from violence and or threats from the patients as they practice.
