On Friday, Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena highlighted the role of women in the transformation of India’s education and politics. Speaking at the 17th convocation of Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU), Saxena stressed that the growing number of women in higher education is more than a statistical phenomenon and is indeed a reflection of change in society.
“Those days of the teacher conducting the exam and guiding the students are over. Time itself was to be your teacher today,” Saxena said. “Among other things, the growing number of women receiving degrees, and more specifically, doctoral degrees, reflects the change in India’s education framework. What is even more important is that women occupy top political positions right now in Delhi—incidentally, as Chief Minister and the Leader of the Opposition. Inclusive growth in education and governance is a strong reflection of these in the mind of the author.”
A total of 24,446 degrees were awarded at the ceremony, including 21,222 undergraduate, 3,112 postgraduate, 12 MPhil and more than 100 PhD degrees.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta told the graduating students to think beyond their aspirations and engage themselves in nation-building. “Even though we talk about the government as the ones who decide the course of our country’s progress, the one who makes this choice is each of us. Each one of us has to discover how we can serve the nation,” she said. Gupta also praised Saxena’s steady hand during rough times and lauded Saxena’s efforts to improve Delhi’s education and urban development.
Education Minister Ashish Sood wished students to incorporate a socially aware perspective in their profession. “It is the foremost duty of people, whether they are professionals or not, to be a responsible citizen. That generation needs to ask questions and bring forward solutions,” he noted.
GGSIPU is a symbol of empowerment and inspiration, a proud journey of Vice Chancellor Mahesh Verma, who said.
