New Delhi: Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) has named Rekha Gupta, named the Chief Minister of Delhi on Wednesday, might be a first-time MLA, but she has had a long innings in politics. By choosing her as the Delhi CM over other prominent faces, including giant-slayer Parvesh Verma, the BJP might be trying to score on multiple fronts.
Rekha Gupta cut her teeth in politics with the Delhi University students’ elections. She is a three-time councillor and former mayor of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC). She was also pitted by the BJP as the MCD mayoral candidate against AAP’s Shelly Oberoi in 2022. She had won Delhi’s assembly election 2025 from Shalimar Seat with a margin of 30000 votes. The proposal was supported by Ashish Sood and Vijender Gupta. Rekha Gupta will take oath as Chief Minister at Ramlila Maidan at 12:30 pm tomorrow.
Rekha Gupta is the National Vice President of BJP Mahila Morcha and hails from Jind, Haryana. She was the secretary and president of the Delhi University Students’ Union. She was also elected as a councillor from Pitampura North constituency in 2007 and 2012. He had to face defeat in the last two assembly elections.
