NEW DELHI—The rising water level of the Yamuna River have caused significant traffic chaos in the national capital, forcing the closure and diversion of key road arteries over the last two days. The continuous rain for the past few days has led the Yamuna River in the capital to breach the 207-metre mark for the fifth time since 1963. The flooding, a result of relentless rainfall and water released from upstream barrages, has led to a major disruption in daily life for Delhi residents. Water from raging Yamuna River has entered the Nigambodh Ghat, Delhi’s oldest and busiest cremation ground, forcing it to halt operations.
On Wednesday, the situation escalated as the Outer Ring Road stretch from Majnu Ka Tila to the Salimgarh Bypass became affected by the rising water level. This key route, a lifeline for commuters, was rendered partially inaccessible, leading to fresh advisories from the Delhi Traffic Police. Diversions were promptly implemented at two crucial junctions: the Wazirabad-Signature Bridge and the Chandgi Ram Akhada-IP College Red Light. Additionally, a portion of NH 44 flyover collapses after heavy rains in Alipur area.
IMD’s weather forecast for the capital predicted thunderstorms with rain, with the minimum temperature likely to settle at 24 degrees Celsius and the maximum expected to be around 33 degrees Celsius.
Meanwhile, although the Delhi airport has not yet issued any notice regarding flight operations, SpiceJet airline has issued an advisory for its passengers. It said, “Due to bad weather in Delhi (DEL), all departures/arrivals and their consequential flights may be affected. Passengers are requested to keep a check on their flight status.”
