The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) on Wednesday told the Supreme Court that vehicular emissions are the biggest contributor to air pollution in Delhi-NCR. The commission also placed before the court its long-term action plan to tackle pollution. According to the CAQM, increasing vehicle numbers, diesel-powered vehicles, and traffic congestion are continuously deteriorating air quality. The commission stressed measures like the use of clean fuel, promotion of electric vehicles, strengthening public transport, and strict monitoring to control pollution.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi, and Justice Vipul M. Pancholi directed the Delhi government, municipal bodies, and relevant agencies of the NCR states to submit their action plan reports for implementing the measures suggested by the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM). The bench clarified that all stakeholders will have to submit their reports to the court within four weeks.

Earlier, Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati, representing the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), presented a report before the bench, recommending 15 long-term measures to combat air pollution.

Chief Justice Surya Kant noted that some additional long-term measures may be required beyond those suggested by the CAQM. The bench clarified that the court would not entertain any objections to the CAQM’s recommendations. Amicus Curiae Aparajita Singh, appointed in the case, argued before the court that the court should set a clear timeline for the effective implementation of the proposed recommendations.
