Delhi: Residents of Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram, and other parts of the National Capital Region (NCR) awoke to a welcome change early Friday morning as severe thunderstorms swept across the area. Accompanied by heavy rainfall and squally winds, the weather event brought much-needed respite from the persistent and oppressive heatwave that had gripped the region for days.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a yellow alert for Delhi, forecasting heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds over the next three days. At 5:19am, the IMD posted on X that “severe thunder lightning” and squally winds ranging between 70–80 kmph were likely over Delhi within the next two hours.

The sudden shift in weather began in the pre-dawn hours, with dark clouds gathering quickly across the horizon. Soon after, the downpour commenced, intensifying rapidly and accompanied by dramatic flashes of lightning and loud claps of thunder. Strong winds, described by many as squally, lashed the NCR, causing trees to sway and loose objects to be blown around.

Due to heavy rain, there has been heavy waterlogging in many areas of Delhi. Also, there are reports of many trees falling in the surrounding areas.

While the intense weather conditions may have caused some disruption to early morning commuters and outdoor activities, the overwhelming sentiment across the region was one of relief. The heavy rain effectively brought down the mercury, offering a significant break from the soaring temperatures that had made life uncomfortable for days. Many residents took to social media to express their delight at the change in weather, sharing images and videos of the refreshing downpour.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a forecast for thunderstorms in the NCR, and the early morning event unfolded largely as predicted. The IMD officials stated that the conditions were conducive for such weather activity due to the interaction of a western disturbance and local atmospheric factors.

Authorities in Delhi and the neighboring cities are likely to assess any potential damage caused by the strong winds and heavy rainfall. However, the primary impact of the thunderstorm has been the welcome relief from the heat, providing a much-needed respite and a cooler start to the day for millions in the National Capital Region. The change in weather is expected to have a positive impact on air quality as well, potentially washing away some of the pollutants that had accumulated during the heatwave.
