Tension has gripped northeast Delhi’s Seelampur area following a dispute over the expansion of a mosque on Brahmpuri’s Lane No. 12. The situation has escalated due to the mosque’s construction work, which has raised concerns among local residents, particularly with a Shiv temple located nearby. Fearing clashes, more than a dozen families are reportedly considering leaving the area.

According to officials, the mosque was originally built in 2013 in Gali No. 13. In 2023, the mosque’s trustees purchased an adjacent plot in Gali No. 12 and began expanding the structure. However, in November 2023, a local resident made a PCR call, reporting alleged unauthorised construction. In response, authorities intervened, and the construction was stopped immediately.

Local Concerns Over New Entrance

As construction progressed, local residents raised objections to a proposed new gate opening into Gali No. 12. While they did not formally lodge complaints or cite any specific incidents, they expressed unease over the development. Senior police officials, including ACP Seelampur and SHO New Usmanpur, visited the area and engaged with the residents.

To address these concerns, the mosque’s managing body agreed not to open the gate in Gali No. 12. Taking into account the sentiments of the residents, authorities again halted construction on February 18, after MCD issued a ‘Show Cause Notice and Work Stop Notice’.
