Winds and sandstorms hit areas of Delhi as well as Noida and Ghaziabad on Saturday, the third day in a row when inclement weather processes affected the capital city. The unexpected change in the weather was in line with the IMD’s earlier warning of thunderstorms, rainfall, and strong winds in the Delhi-NCR region.

According to the IMD, dust originating from North Pakistan was being pushed into the Delhi-NCR area by forceful northwesterly winds originating from the states of Punjab and Haryana. The occurrence of dust storms meant that visibility decreased across many areas during the early part of the week, and instability in the atmosphere has persisted over the past few days.

The IMD issued a warning at 3:30 pm on Saturday that a dust storm, thunderstorm, rain, and lightning would soon affect the region. Wind speed was estimated to be between 40 and 60 kilometers per hour. They further added that the rise in temperature would exacerbate the already challenging living conditions due to the constant fluctuation in the weather.

Several localities in Delhi, such as Narela, Rohini, Karawal Nagar, Delhi University, and areas such as Punjabi Bagh, Kashmiri Gate, and Lodi Road, witnessed rainfall, thunder and lightning, and powerful winds accompanied by clouds on Friday. A number of localities in Noida and Ghaziabad faced similar weather patterns.

Many people in Delhi-NCR were glad to experience the slight rains, as the showers temporarily cooled the urban areas. Even though rainfall offered some respite from the heat, severe weather conditions also brought problems such as poor visibility and lower air quality.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) is keeping track of developments and advising people to remain indoors whenever there are heightened instances of storm activity and not to go outside unnecessarily.
