A fire that broke out Thursday morning at a restaurant in New Delhi’s Connaught Place led to at least six people being burned, according to officials. Immediately, the injured were rushed to Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital for treatment.
Around 11:55 a.m., a distress call was received by Chief of Delhi Fire Services (DFS) Atul Garg on which a fire was reported in the Biryani restaurant inside P Block of Connaught Place, he said. The fire department rallied six fire tenders to control the blaze in the emergency.
Initial enquiries are that the fire was set alight by a leak from an LPG cylinder. Fire tenders were dispatched to the scene after reports of leakage of the LPG cylinder, which is likely the cause of the fire. In the incident, six persons suffered burn injuries and no loss of life had been reported so far, Garg said.
They include Deepak (39), Piyush (31), Mahindra (25), Alam (21), Sairuddin (28) and Janak (26). The others, including Mahindra, suffered the most serious injuries as burns covered 81 per cent of his body. Piyush and Deepak also sustained critical injuries after being burned 70 per cent of their body. Fiftieth victim of apartment blaze, Alam, has less than 30 percent burn injuries, fire officials say, as the other three victims—Sairuddin and Janak—sustained burn injuries less than 30% of their bodies.
The cause of the fire is being investigated by authorities. It is being examined if safety protocols were followed and whether there was negligence while handling the LPG cylinders inside the restaurant.
In the area in question, eyewitnesses said that there was chaos as the fire broke out, people rushed away, and emergency services came to contain the situation quickly. Regulations in the city regarding fire safety of commercial establishments have been under concern since the incident.
