On Saturday, a record sale of South Asian art took place in Delhi, where Saffronart made a record-breaking total of 355.77 crore ($40.20 million) at the white glove auction. The evening sale, which ended just before midnight, raised new standards of both modern and contemporary Indian art, creating a frenzy among the collectors as never before.
Historical records were broken in the auction of famous artists such as Vasudeo Santu Gaitonde, Francis Newton Souza, Tyeb Mehta and contemporary artists like Nalini Malani. According to Dinesh Vazirani, the CEO and co-founder of Saffronart, the auction featured an unprecedented collection of works, and the collectors were eager to seize the rare chance to own a work of art of historical significance. It is an Indian art market record that has been made by this sale.
In 1971, Gaitonde painted an untitled oil on canvas that sold at 67.08 crore, and it became his highest sale after he made 42 crore by Pundole in 2022. It is the second biggest sale of a work by an Indian artist, behind M.F. Husain, Gram Yatra (1954), which made 118 crore at Christie’s earlier this year.
The 2008 Nursery Tales series of reverse paintings on acrylic sheets by Nalini Malani sold in 2008 at 3.6 crore (406,780), the highest price paid to the artist anywhere in the world. A series of six pen and ink sketches by Francis Newton Souza called Six Gentlemen of Our Times sold 20.4 crore (2.3 million). The Trussed Bull by Tyeb Mehta had a sale of 56.4 crore (6.3 million), which then resembled his repeat motif of the bound bull of subdued potential and expression of passion.
Saffronart held the sale on September 27 to celebrate its 25th anniversary.
