Rekha Gupta of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) becomes the first time MLA from Shalimar Bagh and is expected to take the oath as the Chief Minister of Delhi in a grand ceremony at Ramlila Ground on Thursday. She will become the state’s fourth woman to hold the post at 50. After a long gap of 27 years, BJP’s return to power in Delhi was a decisive victory in the assembly elections where the party won 48 out of 70 seats. The party fixated to fully finalize the chief ministerial candidate after intense deliberation. Formally announcing her decision on Wednesday after a key meeting of BJP MLAs held her unanimously as their leader. After that, she met Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena and staked claim to form the government.
Senior BJP leaders will also take oath along with Rekha Gupta as ministers in her cabinet. Reports claim that BJP MLAs including Parvesh Verma, Ashish Sood, Manjinder Singh Sirsa, Raviraj Indraj Singh, Kapil Mishra and Pankaj Kumar Singh are likely to be inducted into the new government. The BJP’s focus will be on good governance, building infrastructure and taking up major civic issues in national capital, BJP has added.
At the same time, the BJP has come under fire from the Aam Aadmi Party, which was unable to retain its majority, for delaying the announcement of the chief minister’s name. The new government has been urged by AAP leaders to focus on the issues of law and order concerns in Delhi. With the BJP all set to take charge, attention is firmly fixed on Rekha Gupta’s leadership as well as the city she would bring to the residents of Delhi in her capacity as chief minister.
