Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday lashed out at her critics labeling them as personally disrespecting her and against her because she is a woman leader and works 24 hours on behalf of the national capital. Her statements were on top of her trolling following a recent slip where she misspelled AQI (Air Quality Index) as AIQ, which resulted in her being criticized on social media.
Addressing the Delhi Assembly at a debate on the Motion of Thanks to the address made by the Lieutenant Governor, V.K. Saxena, at the Winter Session, Rekha Gupta said she was being slandered and made the butt of some lowly remarks. She claimed that the attack was not so much based on a linguistic error but being uncomfortable with having a woman as the chief minister in office and labouring unabated.
They say, why was she writing AQI, AIQ. They do not enjoy that a woman Chief Minister is working 24/7. They demean me at times, at other times they make low remarks, Gupta told the House. She went on to say that some speech mistakes are normal and they can occur to any person. Any mistakes made during speaking and word mispronunciation can be made by anyone. I was wrong, but there are people who commit things willingly, she said.
The Chief Minister emphasized that this type of comments and derision was a bid to shake her leadership and focus her work. She insisted that she is not distracted by the criticism with regard to governance and welfare of the people.
In subsequent posts on social media, Gupta repeated her position and said that she has been working day in, day out in Delhi. She said that her commitment and incessant involvement in social matters are the ones that alarm her critics. “That’s what gets to them. They can’t stand it. They can’t handle it,” she wrote.
