As per an audit conducted in Delhi, the residents of the national capital are throwing plastic and iron worth Rs 1.5 crore daily in their garbage.
As per the audit conducted by the Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI), over 10 per cent of garbage, thrown by Delhiites, is segregated by the rag pickers and sold to earn their livelihood.
The residents of Delhi generate 11 thousand and 30 metric tons of garbage every day. Out of this, 10 per cent (1.10 lakh kg) of garbage is in the form of plastic, iron, e-waste, rubber and paper cardboard. The plastic waste is sold for Rs 12 per kg. In this way, people single out saleable waste and earn Rs 1.32 crore daily. Besides plastic, if iron and paper waste are included, the amount can go up to a whopping Rs 5 crore. This was ascertained after the Municipal Corporation of Delhi got an audit done by ASCI to improve its cleanliness level and find out the shortcomings.
As per the audit report, 11 thousand and 30 metric tons of garbage is produced in Delhi every day. Out of this, over 10 per cent of waste is disposed from unplanned areas. Three per cent of waste is being disposed of through the Material Recovery Facility (MRF). Over 55 per cent of waste is utilised in the Waste to Energy plant. 20 per cent of garbage goes to landfill.
Seven per cent of garbage remains scattered across the streets and roads in Delhi. The audit report revealed a rag picker earns over Rs 14,000. The contractor above them earns Rs 25,000 per month.

Door-to-door garbage collection must be ensured
Cleanliness on roads and streets must be improved
Control centres must be installed to oversee garbage treatment exercise
People should be made aware of cleanliness
The garbage disposal plan should be strengthened at the ward level and zonal level
