A public interest litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Delhi High Court seeking a “high-level” probe into the death of three civil services aspirants due to water-logging in a coaching centre at Delhi’s Rajendra Nagar.
Classrooms and libraries in basements, no proper drainage facilities are some of the rampant safety violations found in several coaching centres across Delhi. These violations were also found at Rau’s IAS Study Circle coaching institute in Rajinder Nagar, where three civil service aspirants lost their lives on Saturday evening due to flooding in the basement.
The victims, Shreya Yadav from Uttar Pradesh, Tanya Soni from Telangana, and Navin Dalwin from Kerala, were caught in the deluge after heavy rains inundated the basement of the centre. The incident has ignited widespread student protests, with protesters accusing local authorities of severe negligence in ensuring the safety standards of educational institutions.
A Bench of Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela said that it would hear the matter tomorrow, Advocate Rudra Vikram Singh mentioned the matter today. “If the files are in order by 12:30 PM, list the matter tomorrow,” Acting Chief Justice Manmohan said.
A organisation named Kutumb has filed by the PIL in the High Court for a probe into the Rajendra Nagar incident.
It has made the Delhi government, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) parties to the case and said that the incident is a result of corruption and failure of the civic authorities of the national capital.
