The arrest of seven foreigners by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has been questioned by a Delhi court, demanding a more thorough and in-depth inquiry into the matter, claiming that the seven foreigners illegally entered India and that they were purported to provide financial assistance to insurgent groups. Special Judge Prashant Sharma at Patiala House Courts passed the order on March 27, giving the accused an extra 10 days custody.
The court posed various and salient questions on the intentions and undertakings of the accused. It wanted to understand the rationale of their entry into India, reasons why they traveled to Myanmar and the motive of using drones. The judge also raised the question of whether people were being trained by drones, or whether any of the Indian citizens or rebellion ethnic groups had any association with their actions either directly or indirectly.
As the court pointed out the gravity of the case, there was need to explore the infrastructures and networks that might have enabled the movement of the accused persons within the country and beyond. It observed that the charges made by the NIA are evidenced by case diaries and evidence that the issue is of a sensitive nature.
The case was serious, and this is why it was proceeded at the headquarters of the NIA. On April 6, the accused will be brought to court as one US citizen and six Ukrainians nationals.
The court highlighted that the discovery of the entire gamut of the supposed activities including any domestic connections is crucial in the national security and in the accountability.
