On Tuesday, the Delhi Police was directed by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to bring down the shield of ‘Z’ format to ‘Y’ format, of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Atishi, the former Delhi minister. Central security agencies reviewed her current threat perception and made the decision.
The development follows a security unit of Delhi Police sending a note to the MHA asking about the level of security that should be provided to AAP national convener and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, as well as to Atishi. The ministry earlier advised against changing the existing security arrangements for both leaders. Yet, MHA later ordered Delhi Police to lower the level of security given to Atishi, based on the outcome of its threat assessment.
His office said the central agencies had concluded that there was no fresh or significant threat and that continued security arrangements under the “Z” category only benefited a person suspected of having specific threats. Her security status was put under reassessment, which was standard procedure for public figures and politicians, particularly when they formerly held ministerial positions.
Atishi, downgraded to ‘Y’ category, will be guarded by 12 fewer security personnel, including 2 commandos from Delhi Police. She is thus going to forfeit some high-level security access, for example, losing her pilot vehicle that she used to be part of the convoy.
It is one of several in a series of moves to review security provisions for various political leaders in the country. However, for now, Kejriwal’s security is not affected, and reviews may further be conducted based on the evolving threat assessment.
