Manish Sisodia, AAP leader and former Deputy Chief Minister in Delhi, was absent from the Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) for his questioning this Monday on a ₹2,000 crore corruption charge in school classrooms. It is confirmed by the ACB that they have summoned Sisodia and Satyendar Jain for questioning as the investigation continues.
Although Jain had to sit through five hours of intense questions from the agency last Friday, Sisodia’s lawyer informed the ACB that he could not appear for questioning because of other priorities. He is expected to be questioned again, said an ACB official. It was confirmed that Sisodia’s attorney gave a clear explanation in writing for his absence and pointed out that he had other important obligations.
The situation involves accusations of scams and high budgets used for the construction of more than 12,000 classrooms or semi-permanent buildings in Delhi’s government schools. Beforehand, CVC found issues with the project, like higher expenses and breaking the rules. The problems pointed out in the CVC report were apparently kept hidden for three years.
While being asked questions, Satyendar Jain is reported to have given vague answers and aimed to pass responsibility on to people in the department. Several sources indicate that Jain did not give an explanation for both cases of illegal appointments and covering up the CVC’s findings. He was presented with a questionnaire, and authorities suspect that he may be called for another interview.
Jain has suggested that this case has political reasons and forms part of a campaign against the leaders of AAP. In the following days, the ACB is expected to call Sisodia for further questioning.
