New Delhi: Tragedy struck a beloved Delhi landmark on Wednesday evening as an ice cream vendor, 25-year-old Prabhakar, was stabbed to death near India Gate. The incident has shaken the national capital, raising concerns about safety in public spaces.
According to reports, Prabhakar was involved in an altercation that turned violent. The details surrounding the fight remain unclear, with some sources suggesting a possible dispute over money. Despite being rushed to the hospital, Prabhakar succumbed to his injuries.
Police have launched a manhunt for the attacker, who is currently on the run. CCTV footage from nearby shops is being analyzed to aid in identification. This incident follows a similar one in February, where another ice cream vendor was stabbed in the Chandni Chowk area.
“The preliminary investigation suggests that the deceased was attacked with a knife due to a fight. The deceased has three wounds on his body, one of which is very deep, due to which he died. We have also recovered some money and a watch from the victim’s bag,” the police told the media.
The death of Prabhakar has cast a shadow over the bustling tourist hotspot of India Gate. Prabhakar, like many street vendors, likely provided a small but vital service to visitors and locals alike. His death serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerability faced by those who work in public spaces.
Earlier in February this year, a 25-year-old ice cream vendor was stabbed multiple times near north Delhi’s Chandni Chowk area, according to police reports. The authorities received a PCR call at 1:25am at Kotwali police station regarding the incident at Nai Sarak.
The Delhi Police are under pressure to apprehend the culprit swiftly and ensure Prabhakar’s family receives justice. The incident has also sparked discussions about improving safety measures in public areas, particularly for street vendors who may be more susceptible to crime.
