As the amount of air pollution has increased, the government has undertaken Stage 3 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP-3) on the entire Delhi-NCR area upon the fact that the air quality in the city has been reported as very poor.

The statistics indicate that the Air Quality Index (AQI) of Delhi was 354 at 4 pm on Friday, and it has been slowly increasing compared to the previous 343 at the same time on Thursday. This increase in the level of pollution led to a tightening of the anti-pollution policies that were taken in order to avoid the further deterioration of the air quality.

GRAP-3 will be activated in cases where the AQI is between 301 and 400 and is classified as the very poor. Some of the restrictions that are made under this stage are; construction and demolition activities, enhancing scrutiny of polluting vehicles and restricting the use of diesel generator sets unless necessary services. The government has also been instructed to improve on the dust control and to make sure that the industrial units are in strict adherence to the norms in pollution.

The government officials explained the high level of pollution by undesirable weather conditions, slower movement of the wind, and more automobile emissions. As winter begins to take hold, the emission of pollutants has been intensifying and it has also become a concern on the health of the population especially children, the elderly and individuals with respiratory diseases.

The citizens are encouraged to spend less time outdoors and comply with guidelines given by the government on health matters. The government agencies are also on the increase of monitoring and enforcement of the implementation of GRAP-3 measures to make sure that they are implemented effectively.

The government will keep a close eye on the air quality levels and will impose more restrictions in case of the deterioration of the pollution levels. The scenario is still under consideration with the officials trying to control the emissions and make sure that the AQI does not fall into the category of severe.
