New Delhi: In a bizarre incident, four men posing as policemen accused a group of students of running a fake call centre and then conducted a fake raid at their house in west Delhi, forcing them to sit like chickens and taking away Rs 1.55 lakh in cash before leaving, police said in a shocking incident that took place last week.
West Delhi residents Manpreet Singh, 29, Junaid Wasid, 23, Kuldeep Singh, 22, and Sarabjit Singh alias Prince, 22, were arrested by the police on Tuesday. They were booked on December 12 for robbery and attempt to murder or cause grievous hurt in connection with the four-hour-long slaying on December 10.
Police said that the victims Kunj Salve, Mohammed Aribul Hasan, Aditya Kumar Verma, Lovepreet Singh, Aditya Vaswani and Sujanya Gupta were not involved in any call centre scam; they were forced to sit like roosters, their pictures were taken with a gun and they were threatened to keep quiet before they could leave. They are students of Delhi University and were not involved in any call centre scam.
Salve said in his complaint that around 9:30 pm on December 10, three men approached him and Vaswani and claimed that they had video proof of their involvement in the fake call centre. The three introduced themselves as policemen, later one of their colleagues also came there, the police officer said. Despite showing their college ID cards and denying any wrongdoing, the four took away their mobile phones in the name of searching.
Salve’s complaint said the accused surrounded all the six students, thrashed them and confiscated their phones and laptops. “After thrashing the students, the fraudsters demanded a bribe of Rs 25 lakh for not registering any case against them or arresting them. When the students refused to pay the money, the accused threatened them with a gun and extorted cash worth about Rs 23,000. After this, they took their debit cards and details from the students, which resulted in withdrawal of about Rs 1.32 lakh,” the official said.
