148 flights have been cancelled, and more than 150 others are delayed at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport today

New Delhi: A total of 148 flights have been cancelled, and more than 150 others are delayed at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport today as dense fog enveloped the national capital on the final day of the year 2025.

At 9 AM today morning, Delhi IGI Airport issued a passenger advisory stating that visibility at the airport is improving; however, some of the flights may still remain affected.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a yellow alert for moderate to dense fog on New Year’s Eve. Visuals showed that visibility had dropped to only a few metres, leaving almost nothing visible on Wednesday morning.

Pollution Update: Govt’s Response

The overall air quality index (AQI) of Delhi stood at 384 as of 7:05 am, according to the Central Pollution Control Board’s (CPCB) Sameer mobile application data.

Only 38 out of 40 stations were functioning in the national capital. Locations like Anand Vihar (452), Ashok Vihar (411), Chandni Chowk (419), ITO (426), and Dwarka Sector 8 (414), among others recorded AQI in “severe” category.

To curb the rising air pollution in the capital, Delhi, the Municipal Corporation has embarked on a new and traditional path. In order to promote environmental protection and clean cremation, the use of cow dung cakes is now being made mandatory. This decision will bring about a major change in the functioning of cremation grounds.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has decided that cremations will only be conducted using cow dung cakes at the capital’s major MCD crematoriums. Clear instructions have been issued to the relevant officials to ensure the availability and use of cow dung cakes as an alternative to wood. The corporation believes this will significantly reduce air pollutants.
