NEW DELHI: Residents across the Delhi-National Capital Region woke up to strong tremors this Thursday morning as an earthquake of magnitude 4.4 struck the area. According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the quake hit at approximately 9:04 AM, with its epicentre located in Jhajjar, Haryana, at a relatively shallow depth of 10 kilometres below the Earth’s surface.

The unexpected shaking made numerous individuals flee their homes and workplaces as a precautionary action. Although the tremors were felt across Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram, and Faridabad, there are currently no reports of casualties or major property damage.

Eyewitnesses recount objects swaying and furniture shaking, causing a second of fear for all. “We clearly felt the tremors. It was very frightening, my car shook,” an eyewitness recounted to a news agency, describing what many residents went through.

Delhi lies in Seismic Zone IV, defined as a “High Damage Risk Zone” by the Delhi Disaster Management Authority, representing a high likelihood of earthquakes of moderate to high intensity. Although seismic activity is quite regular in the area, quakes of this level occur fairly regularly, although bigger ones of magnitude 7-8 are occasional events.

The authorities are keeping a close watch on the situation and have instructed people to be calm and exercise routine safety measures against possible aftershocks. The NCS is continuing to collect data and will issue further reports if need be. Today’s incident is a reminder of the earthquake susceptibility of the Delhi-NCR region and the need to be prepared for an earthquake.
