New Delhi: The NHAI has commenced trial operations of a newly constructed shallow tunnel and associated underpasses along Delhi stretch for Dwarka Expressway will begin today. This significant step, beginning today, May 29th, aims to substantially decongest the Delhi-Gurugram section of NH-48 and enhance connectivity to the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport.
The trial run, which will occur daily from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM, marks a crucial phase in integrating these new structures into the city’s transport network. The shallow tunnel is designed to connect Dwarka and Yashobhoomi directly to the airport via dedicated underpasses, and also provide a route towards Gurugram (towards Sirhaul) from Dwarka/Yashobhoomi. Additionally, a combination of airport underpasses and a right-turn underpass can be utilized for travel from Terminal 3 to Gurugram.
This trial period will allow NHAI to meticulously monitor and evaluate traffic patterns, assess safety measures, and ensure the efficiency of the infrastructure. It’s important to note that the tunnel has a height restriction of 4.5 meters, and certain vehicles, including two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and those carrying flammable materials like oil tankers, will not be permitted inside. The full operationalization of the tunnel is anticipated by June 5, 2025.
The shallow tunnel boasts advanced engineering and safety features, including comprehensive CCTV surveillance, a dedicated control room, and emergency exits to prioritize commuter safety. Once fully operational, these new routes are expected to significantly reduce travel time and alleviate congestion on surface roads, providing much-needed relief to daily commuters between Delhi, Gurugram, and other northern cities. This development is a key part of the larger Dwarka Expressway project, an 8-lane elevated and 8-lane service road structure poised to redefine urban connectivity in the NCR.
