Dozens of people — parents, concerned citizens, environmental activists and even political leaders — were detained on Sunday at India Gate after they staged a protest at India Gate against the worsening air quality. The protest, which originally began around 5 pm was joined by the animal rights activists who were there to show their disapproval over the recent Supreme Court ruling on stray dogs.

Delhi Police said people had gathered without police permission. Protesters also claimed they had been threatened by the police and were told that they would register FIRs and detain them. Eventually, leading to the detention of dozens of protestors.

Neha, a Delhi resident who was protesting, said, “This problem has been going on for years, but no action is being taken. This is a violation of our constitutional rights. We have been struggling with this for 10 years. No one cares about the health and rights of citizens.”

On Monday morning, Delhi’s air quality showed a slight improvement after hitting a season’s high of 391 – ‘very poor’ category – the previous day. Despite the marginal improvement, the air remained toxic to breathe.

Since then, the pollution level has remained in the poor or very poor category. This time, western disturbances kept coming to Delhi at regular intervals. Due to this, there was more rainfall than normal in May and June. After this, due to good monsoon, the rainfall figures were also more than normal in July, August and September. While the temperature dropped due to good rainfall, the air also remained cleaner to a great extent than before.
