New Delhi: Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal moved a plea to Delhi High Court on Monday seeking directions to Tihar jail authorities to administer insulin and allow him to consult through video conferencing daily for 15 minutes concerning his acute diabetes and fluctuating blood sugar level. The Delhi High Court declined this appeal and also denied Kejriwal’s petition seeking advice from a private doctor.
Aam Aadmi Party leader Atishi claimed that the Enforcement Directorate lied in court about Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal getting consultation from specialists at AIIMS regarding his insulin needs.
After much of a struggle, CM Kejriwal was given insulin after his sugar levels spiked to 320, AAP informed on X. Tihar jail officials, however, said Arvind Kejriwal was administered a “low dose” of insulin after his blood sugar levels spiked. His blood sugar level reading was found to be 217 around 7pm, following which the doctors at Tihar looking after him decided to give him insulin.
The AAP leader also alleged that the diet chart for Kejriwal was prepared by a dietician instead of an endocrinologist or dialectologist. Kejriwal penned a letter to Tihar Jail authorities, focusing on his concern about his spiking sugar levels and the fact that he was not being administered insulin as necessary. On April 19, the Tihar jail administration submitted a report to Delhi lieutenant governor VK Suxena stating that Arvind Kejriwal’s health had been evaluated by a medicine specialist on April 10 and 15. The specialist prescribed oral anti-diabetic medications and clarified that Kejriwal had never been refused insulin during his treatment.
AAP party workers carrying placards saying ‘Kejriwal ko insulin do’ sang ‘Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram’ outside the jail. AAP leader Atishi and AAM Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Sanjeev Jha were present at the protest site. ‘This is not a protest; this is our concern about Chief Minister Kejriwal’s health’. AAP leader Atishi alleged a “conspiracy” to harm Mr. Kejriwal. “His sugar level is getting high, and denying him insulin is hazardous for Kejriwal’s health,” she said.
Contrarily, the Tihar administration said they have specialist doctors, but they wrote to AIIMS for a diabetologist. Kejriwal has been in judicial custody for nearly 20 days, but now they are asking for a diabetologist. On Saturday, Mr. Kejriwal consulted with a senior specialist from AIIMS through video conferencing. This video confrencing was organized by the Tihar jail administration on the request of Kejriwal’s wife, Sunita Kejriwal. “After a detailed consultation of 40 minutes, Mr. Arvind Kejriwal was assured of no serious concern and was advised to continue with the prescribed medicines, which will be evaluated and reviewed regularly.”
