New Delhi: The supply of contaminated water in many areas of the capital Delhi has increased the problems of the people. Residents of many areas, including Janakpuri, Bhalswa, Narang Colony, Chander Nagar, Ashok Nagar are complaining about the lack of clean drinking water. The Jal Board had taken a total of 3203 water samples from the command areas of various water treatment plants between 11th and 18th December. Out of these, 33 samples were found unsatisfactory.
Locals say that smelly and dirty water is coming from the taps, which has increased the health risk. Families living in the affected areas are forced to buy bottled water or depend on private tankers for drinking water. There is also a fear of children and elderly people falling ill in many places. Residents have demanded the concerned departments to resolve the problem as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, the issue of dirty water supply in A-1 Block of Janakpuri is currently pending before the National Green Tribunal (NGT). Following the NGT’s strictures, the Delhi Jal Board has begun work to replace old and damaged pipelines in the area. The Jal Board says that water quality will improve after the pipelines are replaced. However, local residents allege that the problem is long-standing and requires a permanent solution rather than temporary measures. People in the affected areas are forced to rely on tankers and bottled water for drinking water.
Rajesh Mahajan, general secretary of the Janakpuri A-1 Block RWA, said that while the situation has improved somewhat since the pipeline was replaced, the problem hasn’t completely disappeared. Mahajan said, “There has been about a 50 percent improvement since the pipeline was replaced, but many homes are still receiving contaminated water.” He also said that since the case was filed, 18 other RWAs have contacted him so that they can legally address the issue of contaminated water in their areas. This clearly shows that the problem isn’t limited to Janakpuri; people in many parts of the city are facing it.
The situation in Ashok Nagar is reported to be even more serious. According to local residents, the area has been receiving a continuous supply of dirty water for the past three days. Mukesh Tank, president of the Ashok Nagar Jan Seva RWA, stated that a complaint has been filed with the Delhi Jal Board. He added that ongoing construction work has damaged pipelines in several locations, leading to water contamination.
