New Delhi: The Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi on Saturday, 28 October 2023, was 286, which falls in the ‘poor’ category. This means that the air quality is unhealthy for sensitive groups, including children, the elderly, and people with asthma or other respiratory problems.
New Delhi Municipal Council has decided to deploy eight anti-smog guns at spots that see crowding to deal with the worsening air pollution.
“We currently have one anti-smog gun at Mahadev Road and it is operating efficiently,” said NDMC vice-chairman Satish Upadhyay.
The major pollutants contributing to Delhi’s poor air quality are PM2.5 and PM10. PM2.5 are tiny particles that are 2.5 microns or less in diameter and can penetrate deep into the lungs. PM10 are larger particles that are 10 microns or less in diameter. Both PM2.5 and PM10 can cause a variety of health problems, including heart disease, stroke, lung cancer, and premature death.
There are a number of factors that contribute to Delhi’s poor air quality, including vehicular emissions, industrial emissions, construction dust, and biomass burning. Vehicular emissions are the largest source of air pollution in Delhi, accounting for about 40% of the city’s total emissions. Industrial emissions and construction dust are also significant sources of air pollution. Biomass burning, which is the burning of agricultural waste and other organic matter, is a major source of air pollution in Delhi during the winter months.

The Delhi government has taken a number of steps to improve the city’s air quality, including implementing stricter emission standards for vehicles and industries, banning construction activities during certain times of the year, and planting trees. However, more needs to be done to improve Delhi’s air quality and protect the health of its residents.
