New Delhi: Amidst an acute shortage in the nation’s capital, the Delhi government has petitioned the Supreme Court for an extension of the water supply from Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, and Haryana for a month. Delhi stated in its plea that the country’s capital’s water shortage was partly caused by the extreme heat. “Delhi currently needs extra water because of the extreme heat. Everyone has an obligation to fulfil the demands of the nation’s capital,” according to the petition.
Some areas of Delhi, particularly the Geeta colony and the Sanjay Camp area in Chanakyapuri, are experiencing serious water scarcity. Long queues of people waiting in the intense heat in the hopes of filling at least one bucket while tankers come and go without carrying sufficient supplies to satisfy the enormous population residing in the colonies.
Over the past few days, Delhi has been experiencing a severe heatwave, with temperatures rising to over 44 degrees Celsius. Due to the heatwave, IMD has issued an alert for Delhi, and in the middle of this growing problem, the people’s access to water is becoming a serious concern.
On Friday, Chief Minister of Delhi Arvind Kejriwal appealed to the central government and the BJP to persuade the governments of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana to assist Delhi in meeting its water demands. According to Kejriwal, the BJP should avoid politicising the matter and support the state government in resolving it. “In this scorching heat, the water demand has increased a lot. And the water that Delhi used to get from the neighbouring states has also been reduced. That means the demand has increased a lot and the supply has reduced. We all have to solve this together,” Kejriwal wrote in a post on X, Kejriwal wrote.
Kejriwal also added, “It’s evident that our BJP colleagues are demonstrating against us. This won’t address the issue. With folded hands, I ask everyone to unite and help the people of Delhi rather than engaging in political discourse at this time. The people of Delhi will be extremely grateful to the BJP for taking this move if it manages to convince the
governments of UP and Haryana to grant Delhi access to water for a month. Nobody has control over this intense heat. But can we help the people get through this if we all work together?”
The nation’s capital’s growing water shortage is currently causing political unrest in Delhi. The Delhi administration, led by the AAP, vowed to file a Supreme Court petition against the Haryana government, blaming them for the growing water problem in the capital. During her visit to the Wazirabad Water Treatment Plant on Thursday, Delhi Water Minister Atishi stated that the nation’s capital needs to receive an equitable portion of water. She told me that the party wants to get a good amount of water and is seeking to get in touch with the national administration. The scarcity of water resulting from Haryana’s capricious policies is what’s generating unrest in different areas of Delhi. In the absence of raw water, how will water be produced?” media reported.
Due to the growing water problem in the capital, female BJP workers earlier staged a protest against the APP government outside the home of AAP minister Atishi. Delhi residents are waiting for a break while the political tug-of-war rages on.
